Carburetors

Hi,

gestern habe ich mal ein paar Stunden geopfert und die Vergaser überholt. Sprich: Auseinanderbauen, ultraschallreinigen, neu fetten und wieder zusammenbauen.
Die Produkte der Reinigungsaktion können sich sehen lassen, nachdem mich der Zusammenbau doch den einen oder anderen Nerv gekostet hat.

Yesterday I spend some hours to overhaul the carbs. My work consisted of: Disassembling, an ultrasonic cleaning treatment, new greasing and reassembling. 
The results are looking pretty good now, after reassembling had taken much of time and nerves.

Clamps and seat

Hi,

heute habe ich mich nach einer kurzen Pause wieder an die Arbeit gemacht. Es stand auf dem Programm:

-Gabelsimmerringe tauschen
-Tankschellen aus Stahl neu anfertigen
-Bleche biegen, um die Sitzbank zu verstärken
-Bremssattel lackieren

Leider wollten die 30 Jahre alten Simmerringe nicht so recht, aber da wird sich schon noch eine Lösung finden.

Hier mal ein paar Bilder der Anfertigungen:

Today I began to work again after having a short break. The following tasks were to do:


-exchange fork seals
-reproduce the tank's clamps out of steel
-make some sheets to enforce the seat's stability 
-coat brake caliper


Unfortunately the 30 year-old fork seals were stuck as hell. Is there any proper solution to get them out?

Die Halteklammern des Tanks passen nun zwischen Tank und Rahmen.
The clamps I made of steel fit between the tank and the frame now.

 These sheets shall reinforce the seat and close the crack when they are welded onto the seat.
Die Bleche sollen die Sitzbank verstärken und den Riss beseitigen, wenn sie dann aufgeschweißt werden.

Tail light

Heute kam das Rücklicht an. LED und EG-Geprüft. Ich werde es bis auf das Streuglas reduzieren und dann in den Höcker einbauen. Durchmesser: 60mm.

Today the tail light arrived.
It's an LED one and I will strip it down to the glass, because I don't need the hull. It will be placed in the end of the tail and I think it will be looking good with its diametre of only 60mm.

heute habe ich mir mal wieder die Flex geschnappt und ein bisschen gewütet.
Bilder sind selbsterklärend, aber ich schreibe trotzdem mal etwas dazu.

Today I took the grinder and worked on the seat again. The pictures are explaining themselves, but I will describe the cutting process nevertheless.

 

So, hier seht ihr wie die Sitzbank nun komplett fertig geschnitten ist. Lediglich die umgebogenen Stücke werden noch abgeflext, da es erst einmal behelfsmäßig passfertig umgebogen wurde.
In jedem Fall wird jetzt genug Platz für die Batterie im Höcker sein. Der Sicherungskasten wird ebenfalls dort hinein verlegt, zusammen mit dem Anlasserrelais. Dabei wird die gesamte Elektronik, außer dem Anlasserrelais, eine einfache Steckverbindung bekommen, sodass man sie leicht vom Höcker trennen kann.

Here you see the finished seat plate. Just the crooked sheets will be trimmed into the right lenght. I bend them to make them fit the tail just provisional first. 
Finally, there is now enough space for the battery, the fuse box and the starter relay. It all will be connected with one connector (except the starter relais, which will be connected with a high current plug) guaranteeing fast access to the electronics.

Ich habe darüber hinaus noch die Kante nachgearbeitet, sodass sich jetzt eine schöne leichte Rundung ergibt.
I corrected the edge so the seat plate is now smoothly curved.
 

Nun sieht das ganze so aus. Als erstes Ergebnis gar nicht mal so schlecht, will ich behaupten. Ich hoffe das Gesamtbild wird nachher auch stimmen, bisher überzeugt es mich noch nicht hundertprozentig. Mal sehen wie es aussieht wenn das ganze Moped zusammen ist.

Finally it looks like that. As a first result it looks not bad, I guess. I hope the whole shape will be good when the bike is finished, but at first I am just a bit confident with this work.

heute habe ich mir mal die Zeit genommen und mal den Höcker praktisch zu Ende geschliffen.
Das war mir aber dann doch zu wenig also habe ich gewagt das frisch laminierte Teil gleich wieder zu bearbeiten und zwar bis es auf die etwas geänderte Grundplatte der Originalsitzbank passt.
Schaut euch einfach die Bilder an, Beschreibungen sind dabei:

Today I spend some time to finish the tail, but that was not enough for me so I decided to cut the just laminated tail and adapt it to the original seat's ground plate. 
Just look at the pictures, descriptions follow:

Hier liegt der Höcker neben der Grundplatte, genau wie er später draufkommen soll.
Es ergibt sich so eine Länge von 780mm für die Sitzbank (Tank bis Höckerende)

This is the hump next to the ground plate, laying as it will be on the plate after adapting. 
The result is an overall length of 780 mm for the seat (tank to tail's end).

Nachdem ich die Flex mal richtig angeworfen habe: Passt schon ganz gut so.
After I trimmed it with the angle grinder it fits relatively well.

 Es ist noch nichts befestigt, also entschuldigt den falschen Winkel des Höckers.
It isn't fastened yet so excuse the bad angle of the tail.

Wie auf dem Bild durch die roten Linien markiert muss die Sitzbank noch abgestimmt und so die Rundung verbessert werden.
As you can see in the picture, the ground plate has still to be finished to smooth the round forms, as shown by the two red lines.

Unglücklicherweise hat das Harz dann doch das Styrodur angegriffen, bleibt also keine Urform mehr übrig.
 Unfortunately the resin attacked the Styrodur's surface so the original form was destroyed.

So wurde die Grundplatte geschnitten um sie auf den Höcker abzustimmen. Sie muss allerdings noch angepasst und dann geschweißt werden.
That's the way I cutted the original ground plate to make it possible for the tail to fit on it. It still has to be finished and welded then.

habe gerade mal einige Neuigkeiten zu präsentieren.
Gestern (Sonntag) habe ich mit freundlicher Unterstützung meines Vaters den Höcker laminiert, denn zu zweit geht die Arbeit auf jeden Fall besser voran.

Nun aber mal zu dem eigentlichen Bericht:

I am proud to tell you some news. Yesterday I laminated the seat's hump with my father's support. This kind of work is more effective with 4 hands ;).


But now to the report:

Der Anfang guter Arbeit ist eine angemessene Vorbereitung!
 
The method for successfull work is proper preparation!

Wie man nicht so toll sehen kann, habe ich Abtönfarbe genutzt, um das Styrodur vor den Lösemitteln des Laminierharzes zu schützen. Die Farbe versiegelt die Oberfläche und ersetzt damit das teure Trennwachs.

As you cannot see in the picture the hump is painted with tinting paint which closes the pores of the Styrodur surface so the solvent of the resin cannot melt the form down.

Das ist also das Produkt des ersten Versuches überhaupt ein Werkstück zu laminieren. Erfahrung mit der Bearbeitung hatte ich schon, jedoch nie die "Drecksarbeit" verrichtet. Ich denke das kann sich für einen ersten Versuch sehen lassen.


This is the result of my first try to laminate some parts. I have experiences in handling GRP but never had done the donkeywork before. All in all I am confident with the result of this first try.

Für diejenigen, die sich eventuell fragen wohin das Vorderrad im vorigen Bild wohl gehört: Genau, an mein altes Moped (Kreidler Florett RMC 1978). Noch gut in Schuss, allerdings saut der Vergaser etwas. 2-Takter-Krankheiten eben.


For those who questioned themselves which bike the front wheel in the last picture would fit. Here it is: My old moped, a Kreidler RMC from 1978. Still in a great shape but with a slightly leaking carb, but that's another story and a typical 2-stroke-disease.

Heute habe ich mir dann mal erlaubt den Höcker zu schleifen und zum ersten Mal zu spachteln. Bis zur perfekten Form müssen aber noch ein zwei Spachtelgänge folgen.

Today I smoothed over the hump with 2 components filler. It still needs a second treatment but this will be my work for tomorrow!

Gestern habe ich die Gabelrohre meiner CB 550 gegen "neue" alte, die ich aus eBay erworben habe, getauscht. Dabei stellte sich heraus, dass diese um gut 20mm länger sind. Im Endeffekt habe ich nun Tauchrohre der 750er dran, sollte aber nicht schlecht aussehen und bietet evtl sogar über der Gabelbrücke Platz für Stummellenker.

Yesterday I swapped my 550's fork tubes with some other "new" old ones I shot on eBay. In fact, these pipes are about 20mm longer than my old ones so now my 550 has the 750's fork tubes.  But it does not matter and maybe it will provide space for a decent pair of handle bars right above the fork brace. 

Da ich keine Poliermaschine zur Hand hatte, hat auch der schmale Streifen Tuch und Autosol herhalten müssen um die Standrohre auf Vordermann zu bringen.

Because I do not own a polishing machine I had to overhaul the rest of the fork by hand with a stripe of cloth and polish. 

Darüber hinaus habe ich mir mal überlegt, wie ich die Elektrik im Höcker der Sitzbank leicht zugänglich machen könnte, sodass es nicht immer ein Riesen Gefummel geben muss, wenn auch nur eine Sicherung getauscht werden soll. Das Ergebnis meiner Überlegungen habe ich schnell in einem Pappmodell festgehalten, damit die Gedanken nicht verloren gehen.

Moreover, I thought about a possibility to guarantee fast access to the electrics placed in the seat's hump. I am not in the mood to tinker around the hump about one hour to change one fuse. The result of my thoughts is now kept in a paper model.

Ich werde wohl eine Pertinaxplatte passend zur Bodenform des Höckers schneiden, die als Rahmen dient (Bild 1 und 2) und darauf bündig zum Höckerboden eine weitere Platte anfertigen, auf der alles fest montiert wird. Mit ein paar Schrauben wird diese dann auf dem Rahmen der ersten Platte befestigt und garantiert so einen schnellen Zugang ohne viel Fummelei indem man die Elektrik einfach herausnehmen kann.

I am going to cut a paxolin plate which fits the bottom of the hump. This plate will be cut as a frame as you can see in photo 1 and 2. It provides the frame for the second plate where the electrics are placed on. The second plate will be connected to the first one with screws and guarantees fast access to the electrics, which can be taken out of the hump this way.

Höcker / Hump

Hi,

heute habe ich mich mal daran versucht aus Styrodur eine Urform für meinen Sitzbankhöcker zu machen.
Nachdem ich unter Protest die Brotschneidemaschine meiner Mutter missbrauchte um eine grobe Form aus dem Styrodurblock zu schälen, war ich mir erst einmal unschlüssig wie die Sitzbank am Ende dann überhaupt enden soll. Habe mich dann entschieden dem Block spontan eine Form zu geben, meist entspricht dies ja sowieso den Vorstellungen.
Das erste Ergebnis lies nicht allzu lange auf sich warten:


Today I tried to cut a original form out of a styrodur block for my seat hump. 
After I finally had won the struggle to get my mother's electric bread cutter, I was wondering about the possible appearance of the hump. 
All in all, I decided to judge about this spontaneously and began to add a form to the block. 
The result is not the worst one I think:

Demnächst wird dann wohl laminiert, wenn die löcher gespachtelt sind. Wenn dann jemand eine weitere Ausgabe haben will, bitte mailen, ich wäre bereit für ein geringes Entgeld einen weiteren Höcker anzufertigen!

Sitzbank / Seat

Hi Leute,
Hi guys,

heute ist die Sitzbank angekommen. Habe sie direkt mal ihres kaputten Bezugs entledigt, nachdem ich allerdings die Schraube zur Befestigung des Riemens ausbohren musste.
Befestigungen und Vibrationsgummis habe ich fein säuberlich entfernt, ich werde sie später wiederverwenden. Es kam einiges an Rost zu Tage, der aber erst entfernt wird, wenn geschweißt wird. Habe sie übrigens für 10 Euro bei ebay geschossen, ganz guter Preis eigentlich.

Today the seat arrived and I stripped it down. The cover was raddled so don't worry about destroying a good one. I took the rubbers off so I can use them later when the seat is finished. Furthermore the seat is quite rusty so I have to weld a smaller crack later when the hump is finished. 
I shot it for about 13 $ on ebay, still a good price I think.

Hello mates,

Gestern habe ich diverse Teile glasperlgestrahlt und das Ergebnis kann sich sehen lassen. Die Gabelbrücke und Anbauteile werden wohl poliert, die Bremse unter Umständen vielleicht einfach nur klarlackiert.

Yesterday I blasted some parts with glass beads and the result is clean, oxidationfree aluminium.
The fork brace and some other parts will be polished, the others are going to be left as they are now, but clearcoated.
